Midneard

A Phase Caught Between Magic and Technology - Light and Darkness.

A battlefield for the Al'mengeds' soul.

The Midneardian phase is a nexus of two states. The world we live in and the world we fantasize about. Whether you live in the Chiral Cities, or one of the Over Cities surrounded by Miṱis as you can be either magical or mundane, but not both at the same time. Usually.

There are those who straddle both worlds. They usually work for The Office of Enlightenment and are the unseen social workers that run interference between the magically handicapped and those who may abuse them. Networks of operatives controlled by the order meddle in Miṱi affairs at every level, including the magical trafficking of those capable of casting but unable to see or understand what is happening. They work hand in hand with The Éilnakil.

Descendants of The Preikaphian Guard, The Éilnakil were born out of necessity after the massacre of the guard's headquarters and training center on Jersey Island during WWII. The modern guards-members, a division UnderGov, have embedded units with all large enforcement and surveillance operations organizations worldwide to help track and fight the order and maintain the Al'menged's coherence.

There is also of course, commerce and the special kind of bureaucracy that comes with it. This phase is a hub for interphasic commerce and the backbone of the public portal system that allows much of it to pass through its gaping maw of paperwork.

While magic works just as well as it does in Preikaph, the amount available for casting is far less than Preikpahs. Due to this, many students take their secondaries in Midneard before going to take their Heibert Exams as it helps refine a caster's control.

Of course, there is some overlap. Most of it is in back rooms filled with incense, tea leaves and some kind of fruit plate- maybe some cheese. That's the difference. Real casters don't need costumes or tapestries to be whispered about. They're just right way too much. That's how you can find a real magician. They're the ones that a friend of a friend knows. They probably work with the office of enlightenment, too.

Kattekt

Hidden right in front of your face.

When there's just enough magic for things to get weird.

While there is some diversity in Midneard's posotic ecosystem, most of the native magical fauna are cryptids living in rural areas. The bulk of the surface-dwelling magic biota has migrated to the other two phases of the Al'menged. The main exception is cats, Dwarvs, and Elvs. A few Cheps here and there, but most of the Greater Fauna's registrations are with other phases.

This is not to say that a magical biome doesn't exist- but most miṱis wouldn't see it in the first place. That's in large part due to the Chiral Cities. Passive inverted spatial fields that mirror all of the large population centers now hold the bulk of anything that is biologically magic. The rest live in rural and difficult-to-access territories or have immigrated to another phase if they were one of the greater animals. After all... things did get a little bit out of hand there with that whole Inquisition thing.

There are, of course holdouts. Some of the Elvs have dimensional buds like the Clade of Greenland, and the Dwarvs have the Trans Antarctic Cities, but the rest are a handful of solitary cryptid colonies. Most of the remaining magical botany that wasn't harvested or burned to extinction is either camouflaged to most phase blind or deadly to humans at this point, so they pose little threat. One of the few that does not is the Tripartite Lily that winds three tubers helically around each other physically so that if one is disturbed, the other two will break coherence and start their maturation process from the beginning before attempting to bloom again.

General Information about the phase of Midneard

Botanical and Biological Development in the Midneardian Phase

Most of the Magical things in Midneard are in plain sight. Cats, for example. There's a reason they've been worshiped for centuries.
Fugi is another one. There is magic in those mushrooms... if you can see it. It's an unfortunate aspect of being a Miṱi in the Al'menged.
Much of it is lost in translation.
Still, there is intrigue and mystery if you're willing to go look for it. And, for the lucky few, some may even find it.

The Phase Wars of Midneard

Even the magically civilized have a history, and as you can imagine, it is not pretty.
Throughout the ages there have been wars waged in on form or another- even magical ones.
Some have gone unnoticed by most Miṱis, such as the orders' involvement in WWII and the assistance it gave to the Axis countries.
Others- like The Crusades or Inquisition have a decidedly more concrete historical record.
A ban on all acts of war, both magical and mundane in nature, was enacted after the fall of the Axis forces and the signing of The Daylight Accords
that established a formal inter-phasic government system to represent all of the denizens of the Al'menged.

The Miṱis - Humans

The world you and I see is the world of the Miṱis in this phase. This includes the good, the bad, and the ugly... the sole exception being-
The belief in magic
Why would we? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof- right? Besides, you can see the wires if you look at it just right. Right?
And yet, mysteries persist, even in this day and age.
Strange creatures are reported, UFOs are sighted in the sky, and people go missing. Or, do they?
What if all of these strange phenomena had a simpler explanation?

The Casters - Humans

To be a caster in Midneard is to walk a double life. You of course, live in one of the Chiral Cities that dot the globe.
You could use surface travel to get between them, but the Miṱis have taken over everything above ground, so why would you? It's easier and safer to take a public pad.
Aside from that, your life would be much like your counterparts in the other phases. Magical to a degree, with the appropriate technology level taking up the slack.
A nice, quiet place for everyone... right next door to the very people that may bring about the end of the universe's existence.

Elven Clades in Midneard

Elvs of Greenland
There are a few Elvn clades in Midneard. The most notable being the Elvs of Greenland.
They specialize in hybridized plants for orbital platforms and deep space centers, often including dwarf varieties that produce full-sized fruits within limited spaces.
Another is the Elvn clade of the Amazon.
A highly reclusive clade that few Sœmlnge visit, they are extremely eco-centric and rarely leave the clade or its surrounding forest.
The last notable branch of the Sœmlnge in Midneard are the Elvs of the Oort Cloud.
The Oort Elvs are Sœmlnge in name only at this point. Descended from Preikaphian Elvs that migrated to Midneard, they quickly became dominated by a series of rulers that led to generations of inbreeding.
Today, they more closely resemble "Little Green Men" and have taken refuge in the Oort cloud. They however, routinely turn to Earth's Miṱi population in search of new genetic material.
This practice had led to many claims of abductions or alien probings among the Miṱi population, as the Elvs are usually in search of gut cells to turn into stem cells.

Dwarven Cities of the Trans-antarctic Mountains

The Dwarvn undercity at the south pole has become a symbiotic safety valve of sorts for the Dwarvn race.
Dwarvs consider their entire population to be one group and refer to themselves as The Family collectively.
The Trans-Antarctic Cities are the one place you can get away from all of that, unless you want to join the guard.
Either way, you're going to become enʞi'Ǩor ḳŴä- One of the renounced when you leave.
While the cities follow similar cultural paths, there is decidedly more room for personal interpretation of all aspects of society.
With a more permissive outlook and the need to survive, the cities have become renowned as weapons merchants and are one of the few places you can get magical items even if you're a Miṱi.
If you can pay for it.

The Éilnakil & Preikaphian Guard

The history of the guard in it many forms can be traced back to ancient Sumeria.
Originally formed to repel raiders and retake the city that had sacked, they have remained a part of the magical history for centuries.
They have taken many forms through the ages across the globe, but can be found by their affiliations with the fights for justice and equality.
First formalized into The Preikpahian Guard during the early Medieval period, they eventually formed a school and training facility on the Isle of Jersey that handled training worldwide.
It was a weakness that was exploited in the St.Kate's Day Massacre during WWII that nearly destroyed the corps and drew the casters into the Miṱi's WWII.
After the war, the guard was modernized into the Éilnakil and formally became a department of UnderGov with embedded units in all major governments worldwide.

The Defenders of Kell'egh in Midneard

Humans in Kell'egh have a tendency to become phase-bound.
Because of that, it has required different techniques to bolster the Kell'eghian version of the Preikaphian Guard now that most of them can no longer shift.
Much like the Quakers, they continue their tradition by accepting members from Midneard to train with them as crucial inter-phasic arms of the organization.
The last remnant of the old-style guardsmen, the group persists as Kell'egh's phase requires combat proficiency with large edged weapons to ensure survival.
Interphasic members of TDK are often skillful casters as well as they are prime targets for members of the order.

Devils Tower - the order stronghold

The Devils Tower geological feature is commonly referred to as a natural triple in the Al'menged, as it appears the same in all three phases, which makes crossing between phases at that point easier.
As a group, the order has co-opted the space. In Kell'egh, it is their headquarters. In Midneard- a chiral complex. The Preikaphian echo sits fallow but surrounded by Preikaphian sensors of every stripe.
It is from here that the order plots, plans and schemes to break the worlds apart to achieve their long-sought retribution.

Cephs working in Midneard

While there are no Ceph colonies in the Midneard phase, that does not mean that it is from a dearth of population.
Most Cephs are fairly solitary in nature, even though they are drawn to high input jobs because of their neural architecture.
There are those who work in the mercenary realms, however. They make up the bulk of the Cheps that live in the overside. The remainder keep to the chiral cities.
It's in the chiral spaces that you'll find the largest population of Midneardian Cephs. They follow the more normal distribution amongst the population.
Information and multi-tasking positions across any sector of education or industry are the homes most seek as a place to engage all six of their brains at one time.

Magical Sub-Government of Midneard

Much of Midneard's SubGov is located in chiral versions of long-standing institutions like The Smithsonian or Oxford University.
It's there that the bulk of inter-phasic bureaucracy takes place, with additional surveillance and interdiction duties within the surface governments of the world.
This is where the Éilnakil and the Office of Enlightenment work hand in hand to help curb order traffic and operations seeking to disturb the Al'menged's balance.
This fight extends to legal battles involving historic places and environmental protections as well,
as many in the order secretly fund or sit on the boards of companies seeking to create a new future by destroying much of the past.

The Office of Enlightenment

While the Office of Enlightenment came from humble beginnings, it has grown into one of the largest inter-phasic regulation systems.
Today's department continues to work with the wild magic population as well as the immigration and naturalization of Al'menged citizens and their UPL or Universal Phase Location.
In addition, they work with magical trafficking cases and make welfare checks on the magic-born into Miṱi phase-blind families who do not hold Al'menged citizenship.
The department also has an outreach arm that works, albeit clandestinely, with production houses to help sway public opinion of magic and those who practice it to a more favorable place.
They even run counter programming to faith healers, astrologers, and card or tea readers of every stripe, which is sadly where most Miṱis get their first experience with actual magic, which is a bit ironic.

Interphasic Commerce

Midneard holds a special place as it has access to two different worlds, so it was bound to become a center of commerce.
Whether it is magical goods out of one phase bound for another or durable goods bound for both inter-phasic and chiral/surface distribution- you can find it here.
It has also become a battlefield of its own with many who prefer wealth and secrecy reaching out from the phase of Kell'egh while their opposition reaches out from Preikaph.
The flow of capital and intrigue runs deep between those giants of commerce that honor the past and their community, and those that seek advancement just for the thrill of it.
This is, of course, a situation ripe for exploitation as many in the Miṱi underworld have figured out, creating a new kind of problem for the phase's private security teams.
